Differential Pressure Gauge on Cleanroom AHUs: One Glance Tells You When to Replace the Filter

A Practical Field Guide for Cleanroom Operators & Facility Managers

Standing in front of a cleanroom Air Handling Unit (AHU), that row of small gauge heads on the panel may look intimidating — but they really only do one thing: tell you whether the filters inside are dirty and need replacing.

 

1. The Differential Pressure Gauge = The Filter's "Blood Pressure Monitor"

Each filter has two pressure-sensing tubes connected — one upstream (before the filter) and one downstream (after the filter) — both leading to a differential pressure gauge. The number displayed on the gauge is the pressure difference across the filter, i.e., the filter resistance.

The rule in one sentence: The cleaner the filter, the lower the resistance; the dirtier it gets, the higher the resistance climbs.

 

2. What Resistance Readings Are Normal at Each Stage

The table below is your quick-reference card — keep it handy in the plant room.

Rule of thumb: Final resistance ≈ 2 × initial resistance. When a new filter is installed, the gauge shows the initial resistance; as it loads up over time, the reading climbs. Once it hits the final resistance — replace it.

 

3. The Gauge Is "Talking": 3 Signals to Watch For

What the Gauge Does What It Means
Gradually rising Normal fouling — just keep tracking the trend.
Suddenly drops Danger! The filter media has ruptured, a seal has failed, or airflow has collapsed. Shut down and investigate immediately.
Stuck at zero / not moving The pressure-sensing tubes are clogged or the gauge itself is faulty. Don't be fooled by a "false normal." Purge the sensing tubes regularly.

 

4. When to Replace the Filter

At final resistance — the hardest rule: G4 ≥ 100 Pa, F8 ≥ 250 Pa, H13 ≥ 450 Pa.

Initial resistance has doubled — the safer rule: When the reading hits 2× the initial reading recorded at installation.

Calendar intervals are only a rough reference: Pre-filters every 1–3 months, medium filters every 3–6 months, HEPA filters every 1–3 years — but always let the gauge reading be the final authority.

HEPA filters — don't rely on the gauge alone: After replacement, a PAO leak test (aerosol integrity test) is mandatory. If a HEPA filter is found ruptured, replace it even if the pressure reading hasn't reached the limit.

 

In Summary

Cleanroom AHU differential pressure gauges boil down to four lines:

▶  Watch the trend day-to-day.

▶  Replace at final resistance.

▶  If it suddenly drops — stop immediately.
